My great-grandparents and grandmother (Polish Catholics) lived in a DP camp in west Germany after the war, after which they emigrated to Australia in the postwar immigration drive.

I have a childhood memory that sticks with me, of my grandmother being asked in a church group why she hadn't returned to Poland after Hitler lost the war. Her reply was "Because Poland wasn't free", meaning of course, it was under Soviet control.

This was met with some indignation by an old man (a recent Polish immigrant), who claimed not to know what she was talking about (if you can believe that!)
